POKOTABI / Kunikiya
くに喜や
Tucked away in a quiet quarter of Ikebukuro, Kunikiya serves Saga beef special kalbi, premium salted tongue, and Wagyu upper skirt steak at an intimate counter, complete with Morioka reimen and gomtang gukbap.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A short walk from Ikebukuro's neon corridors into the calmer residential streets leads to the discreet exterior of Kunikiya. Preserving the refined, understated ambiance of a former traditional ryotei restaurant, the dining room centers on a comfortable counter where solo guests can settle in without hesitation for high-grade yakiniku.
Carefully butchered cuts take center stage across the menu. Alongside staples like jo tan shio (salted prime beef tongue) and rich Wagyu jo harami (skirt steak), kalbi comes in multiple grades: Saga beef kalbi, Saga beef jo kalbi, lean assari jo kalbi, Saga beef special kalbi, and Saga beef rib roast, inviting guests to compare varying degrees of marbling and chew. Offal offerings include horumon and jo mino, and Sangen pork loin is also on hand, with sweet tare-sauced meats pairing naturally with bowls of freshly steamed rice.
A solid selection of sides keeps the palate refreshed between grilling. Crunchy kakteki radish kimchi, senmai sashimi (third stomach), crisp salads with house dressing, rich gomtang ox-bone soup, and spicy yukgaejang-style tegutan soup reflect steady kitchen craft. To conclude, springy chilled Morioka reimen or broth-soaked gukbap round out the meal with clean satisfaction.
The drinks card covers draft beer, highballs, fresh lemon sour, shochu, Akita's Takashimizu sake, and wine by the bottle. Operating from 17:00 to 24:00 Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays), the restaurant offers an easy venue for a relaxed late-night bite and a chat with the owner over the counter. Securing a dinner reservation in advance is recommended when planning an unhurried evening.
